When to Coach vs Mentor? 🤔

This week I was helping a Tech Leader improve their coaching skills. The dilemma we explored this week was when to coach vs mentor?

It's common for leaders to assume coaching and mentoring are the same. However, once you start to develop coaching skills it quickly becomes apparent that there are some differences.

To help this particular tech leader I drew this model. It describes two factors that can help you decide:

Coaching Mentoring Matrix

For a given challenge or goal, you can think about two dimensions.

  • The nature of the challenge: Does it relate to the person's external world (skills, knowledge, things) or their internal world (beliefs, assumptions, mental models)?

  • Their ability to tackle the challenge: Do they have the skills, knowledge, confidence to tackle their challenge?

Reply to this email to let me know how you decide when to coach or mentor.

Book Summary: Making of a Manager 📚

How do you become a great manager? 🔥🔥🔥

Management is a deeply human endeavour to empower others. It is also a highly personal journey.

Julie shares her experience to highlight many practical things Managers can do to lead well.

💡 3 Big Ideas:

  1. A Managers job is to build a team that works well together.

  2. Leadership is not something that can be bestowed. It must be earned. People must choose to follow you.

  3. To become a great manager you must invest deeply in your personal development.

✨ My Top Takeaway from the book was:

Your success in managing others is dependent on how well you can manage yourself.

Here is the full summary that expands on the big ideas.

The Coaching Habit Visualised 🎨

I teamed up with Sathya again this week to visualise the 7 Coaching Questions from Michael Bungay Stanier's Epic book The Coaching Habit

Can you guess which image relates to which question? 1. The Kickstart Question - What’s on your mind? 2. The AWE Question - And what else? 3. The Focus Question - What’s the real challenge here for you? 4. The Foundation Question - What do you want? 5. The Lazy Question - How can I help? 6. The Strategic Question - If you’re saying Yes to this, what are you saying No to? 7. The Learning Question - What was most useful for you?

This video shares more about the 7 Questions 📹

Quote of the week
